Motorcycle Riding Tip of the Week -- Riding a Motorcycle at Night
A study conducted in 2005 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found the following:60% of all motorcycle fatalities occur at night! This statistic might not seem overwhelming, but consider these facts:
- During warm weather months, it's daylight for more than half the day.
- More people ride during daylight hours.
It's impossible to know the exact breakdown of total miles riden at night versus miles riden during the day. But, one might conservatively estimate that over 80% of the total motorcycle miles riden during each year occur during daylight. Think about it. Approximately 60% of the fatalities occur during 20% of the total miles riden. This is significant. What can we do to reduce our risks?
- Recognize that riding a motorcycle at night is riskier.
- Plan ahead so your ride is complete before dark.
- When you do get caught riding after dark, ride defensively (leaving extra margin) and assume you are invisible to others.
- Make sure your riding gear has reflective material.
But the best thing we can do to reduce our risk -- don't ride at night.
MotorcycleMentor.com™ Site Status
The site is in the final stages of development, and should ready to launch soon. It's been well over a year since the idea of producing a site for new motorcycle riders was born. I'll give you more information in future Tips. Stay tuned.

The MotorcycleMentor forum is a great place to ask questions. Here is a recent example...
Pete discusses some of the types of braking systems on motorcycles, and the lack of 'instructions' on how to properly use them...
"I'm under the impression that even though there are a variety of non-standard braking systems offered to us by the various manufacturers, none come with any particular instruction as to how to actually use them to their greatest effect. In other words, they've designed some fancy new stuff (which changes year-to-year in some lines) but are afraid (litigation) to provide any clues as what to do with it..."
Forum discussions on motorcycle 'linked brakes' and ABS followed...
