Personal Note:

Three big things happened last week in my life. We officially launched MotorcycleMentor.com. I turned 40-something. And... our Shitzu "Ginger" had puppies.

While there was certainly stress associated with each of these events, the puppy birthing was the most stressful.

My wife, Sue, and I felt confident we could handle the delivery. But, things quickly started deviating from "normal" described in the books we read. An emergency trip to the Vet followed. Five hours later everything had settled down, and Ginger had four puppies.

It's really Paul Harvey's fault. Not too long ago, I heard Paul read a letter he wrote to his Grandchildren. One of his wishes for them was to see puppies born at least once in their life. After that, I conceded to my kid's pleas. His full letter is here.

Motorcycle Riding Tip of the Week --
Cancel That Turn Signal

Nearly all turn signals on motorcycles require the rider to cancel them manually. Cars' systems cancel automatically as the steering wheel passes certain points in the turn. Since our bikes don't have steering wheels - thank goodness - we have to cancel the blinker ourselves.

Here's a method I use to cancel my turn signal.

Think of a turn signal as an intention to turn. All we care about is letting other drivers know that we are about to turn.

So, while still in the turn, I cancel the turn signal indicator.

If you develop the habit of hitting the cancel button while in the turn, or even as you are entering it, you are less likely to inadvertently ride with your turn signal on.

Giving others the "wrong" information is worse than giving "no information". Drivers react to your intentions -- given by your turn signals. They could turn in front of you or pull out in front of you... thinking you are slowing to turn.

Develop a routine that helps you consistently cancel your turn signal.

Getting the Forums Active, "Forum Prize Suggestions?"...

It's been almost 24 hours, and no new posts. Trust me, you are not the only one who has joined!

You are NOT here alone...

Hum, what can I do (in fun) to get you guys to post something? I asked a friend at lunch and he said, "Give something away."

OK, I'm game. And for all those who post something in the forum, your name will be placed in a hat... one name will be pulled from said hat and declared WINNER of "the prize".

The question is "what prize"? So, do you have any ideas on what the prize should be? Simply hit "Reply" below and tell us your suggestion. The forum feature is really easy to use, and you can edit your posts at any time.

Just think, if you ARE the only one who joined, you automatically win ;-)
