David and his Honda VFR Interceptor motorcycle

David was 14 when he took ownership of his first motorcycle -- a bright orange Honda Express. "While classified by many as a 'moped', the 50cc Honda had fixed footpegs, a two speed automatic tranny, and a peppy top speed of 35 mph. Much faster than the traditional moped 'bicycles with engines' my friends owned." He recalls, "There was plenty of power and range to explore the entire city of Pensacola -- stopping short (only) of Interstate travel. My parents would shudder to know exactly **where** I explored. The odometer didn't lie, thank goodness they never looked." After the Honda became too old, too small, and too orange...it was retired. The memories, feelings of freedom, and passion for exploring, however, never died. There were always good reasons NOT to purchase another motorcycle -- not enough time, too dangerous, family concerns. Many years later, however, he made the decision to buy another motorcycle. With less hair and more years, the prospect of motorcycle ownership was quite different. This time, he wanted to make the right decisions, while minimizing the risks as much as possible.

He recalls, "I had so many questions; which bike should I buy, should I take training, what is countersteering, what can I do to reduce my risk, what are some defensive riding techniques, what riding gear should I wear, what type of motorcycle (cruiser, tourer, dual-sport) should I purchase. Getting concise valued information was difficult. When I searched for information on the internet, it seemed most sites focused on a particular type of motorcycle. I wanted motorcycle information from experienced riders, not information about a particular model of motorbike." David sought - and found - wise experienced riders to mentor him. "There is more to learn about motorcycling than I ever imagined. Funny thing, my mentor (in his 60s) has a mentor, and his mentor has a mentor. Wow, I thought, I wish more riders could benefit from this type of mentoring." MotorcycleMentor.com™ was born. "The motorcycling community is a wonderful way to meet friends and enjoy the outdoors. I started this site to bring experienced riders, together with inexperienced riders. I understand - first hand - the frustrations a new rider might experience. This is a sport that takes many decades to become truly 'experienced'. Even then, experienced riders will tell you they never stop learning." A mechanical engineer by training, David resides in Northern Alabama with his wife and two children. He enjoys exploring this great riding country on his Honda VFR Interceptor. And now, he has more than enough engine power to utilize interstates.
